Our Legacy
For nearly a century, Chapman-Davies Optometry has been a cornerstone of eye care in our community. Established in 1927 by William Davies—a highly regarded optician and chemist—the practice was founded on a deep commitment to clinical excellence and genuine care for patients.
In 1947, his son, Basil Chapman-Davies, took the helm. The practice quickly became a staple along The Boulevarde, Lakemba. Basil continued his father’s legacy, fostering strong community relationships while delivering the highest standard of eye care with professionalism and compassion.
In 1979, the next generation of Chapman-Davies care began as Anthony Chapman-Davies joined the practice, following in the footsteps of his father, Basil, and grandfather, William.
By 1981, Anthony had become principal optometrist, bringing not only a deep respect for the practice’s values but also a forward-thinking approach that embraced clinical innovation.
He was one of the early optometrists to introduce advanced diagnostic techniques such as indirect ophthalmoscopy and gonioscopy—enhancing the precision and depth of patient care.
Highly respected in the field, Anthony’s leadership has been defined by expertise, integrity, and a genuine commitment to the community.
The Josef Lederer Award for Excellence
In 1998, Anthony Chapman-Davies was honoured with the Josef Lederer Award for Excellence in Clinical Optometry. This prestigious recognition highlighted his unwavering commitment to clinical excellence and patient care, values that have been core to the practice since its early days.
Pioneering Technology and Education
As one of the first practices in the region to adopt advanced technologies like the fundus camera and photo slit-lamp in the 1980s, Chapman-Davies Optometry has always been committed to staying at the forefront of eye care.
In addition to his clinical work, Anthony has been dedicated to shaping the future of optometry. Since 2013, he has served as a Conjoint Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), mentoring the next generation of optometrists. His passion for education ensures that the practice's legacy of excellence continues to influence the field for years to come.
In 2017, Thomas Cheong and Michael Kang joined Chapman-Davies Optometry as partners, bringing with them a wealth of experience and innovative expertise. Their leadership introduced cutting-edge technologies such as 3D corneal imaging, digital slit-lamp imaging, and advanced dry eye assessments, further enhancing the practice’s ability to provide exceptional care.
