What Are Atropine Eye Drops?

Low-dose atropine eye drops are commonly used to help slow the progression of myopia (short-sightedness) in children.
Myopia typically worsens as a child grows, but studies have shown that low concentrations of atropine—such as 0.025% and 0.05%—can help reduce how quickly this happens.
At Chapman-Davies Optometry, atropine is often recommended as part of a myopia management plan to help protect your child’s long-term eye health.

How Do Atropine Drops Work?

Atropine drops work by slowing the elongation of the eye, which is the main cause of worsening myopia.
They are typically used once daily at night and are well tolerated in low doses.

Types of Atropine Eye Drops

There are two main types of atropine drops:
1. Preserved Atropine Drops
Contain preservatives to maintain shelf life
Generally more affordable
May cause irritation in sensitive eyes
2. Preservative-Free (Non-Preserved) Atropine Drops
No added preservatives
Often more comfortable for sensitive eyes
Typically higher in cost

Atropine Concentrations Available

Low-dose atropine is usually prescribed in:
0.025%
0.05%
Your optometrist will recommend the most appropriate concentration based on your child’s needs and progression rate.

Where Can You Get Atropine Eye Drops?

Atropine drops are not available over the counter. You will need:
A prescription from your optometrist or eye care professional
To have them made at a compounding pharmacy
A compounding pharmacy is a specialised pharmacy that prepares custom-made medications tailored to the required dosage.

Is Atropine Right For Your Child?

Atropine eye drops are most effective when started early in children with progressing myopia.
We recommend booking a comprehensive eye examination to determine whether myopia control treatment is suitable.
