Our Optometrists

Michael Kang

Principal Optometrist, BOptom, FBCLA

Michael is an experienced optometrist with over 15 years of practice in both regional and metropolitan settings. He is dedicated to providing personalised, evidence-based care, particularly for patients with complex eye conditions.

In 2023, Michael was awarded Fellowship of the British Contact Lens Association (FBCLA), a prestigious honour recognizing his significant contributions and advanced expertise in contact lens practice and anterior eye care. This Fellowship is awarded to practitioners who demonstrate a high level of clinical excellence, ongoing professional development, and a commitment to advancing the field through education, research, and leadership. Achieving FBCLA reflects Michael’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards in complex contact lens fittings.

Michael’s clinical interests include keratoconus management, myopia progression control, and advanced contact lens fitting, including specialty lenses such as scleral and orthokeratology lenses.

Michael has also undertaken additional training with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and is a credentialed optometrist qualified to perform eye examinations for pilot licensing, ensuring that aviation professionals meet the rigorous vision standards required for safe flight operations.

In addition to his clinical work, Michael is actively involved in education and currently supervises final-year optometry students at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Optometry Clinic. He is committed to mentoring future optometrists and supporting their professional development.

At Chapman-Davies Optometry, Michael combines his extensive clinical experience, specialist knowledge, and passion for continual learning to provide the highest standard of care to his patients.

Thomas Cheong

B.Optom (TPA), Ophthalmic Medicines Prescriber

Thomas completed his Bachelor of Optometry at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He was awarded a research scholarship for his work on light damage in relation to the genetic condition retinitis pigmentosa, which culminated in a published paper in the Journal of Neuroscience.

Thomas began his career working at several highly reputable practices in New Zealand before broadening his experience regionally, focusing on eyecare and eye conditions. 

He spent several years locuming across metro and regional Australia, gaining diverse experience in various optometry settings. 

In 2017, Thomas and Michael joined forces with Anthony Chapman-Davies at Chapman-Davies Optometry, where they eventually took over the helm and continued the legacy of the practice. 

As part of his commitment to the advancement of optometry, Thomas has supervised and mentored final-year optometry students at the University of New South Wales, following in the footsteps of A/Prof Anthony Chapman-Davies.

As the Principal Optometrist of the practice, Thomas is highly experienced in treating all patients and their vision needs. This includes, but not limited to the treatment of dry eyes, glaucoma, binocular vision, myopia management, complex prescriptions and general contact lens fitting. 

Thomas is known for his patient care and empathy, dedicating time and attention to every detail in order to deliver exceptional outcomes for his patients' optical and eyecare needs. His ethos, "Every detail matters," reflects his commitment to ensuring he delivers exceptional outcomes for his patients optical needs as well as eyecare. 

Maya Zakzouk

Optometrist, BOptom (Hons) MOptom GradCertOcTher

Maya completed her Bachelor of Optometry degree at the University of New South Wales, graduating with Honours. She was appointed at Chapman-Davies Optometry as a new graduate under the mentorship of A/Professor Chapman-Davies. Maya went on to complete her Master of Optometry qualification at the University of New South Wales with a major in ocular disease detection and management. Maya was among the first cohort of Optometrists in NSW to obtain therapeutic prescription qualifications.

The next chapter of her professional career took her to visiting Optometrist roles throughout regional and coastal NSW and across the ACT over several years. This allowed her to focus on her clinical Optometry skills in rural settings, Tele-health Optometry, managing emergency cases, and collaborative management of patients with allied health professionals. 

Maya has extensive experience in Optometry practising for over 15 years. She combines her experience, knowledge and ongoing education to provide personalised and empathetic care to her patients to find the best custom solutions and care management plan for each individual.

Maya practices full scope Optometry and has a keen interest in ocular disease detection and management, dry eye management, soft contact lens fitting, glaucoma, macula and diabetes screening, and myopia management.
